Smoking materials cited in North Liberty apartment fire

The Gazette

NORTH LIBERTY - Discarded smoking materials caused a fire that damaged an apartment building late Monday, officials said.

Firefighters responded to a 12-unit apartment building at 1245 Alexander Way around 9:32 p.m. and found smoke and fire showing from the exterior deck and wall of unit No. 204.

North Liberty Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Hardin said crews controlled the fire within five minutes and had it extinguished within 10. Damage was limited to the exterior of the building, and is estimated at $2,000.

The building was occupied when the fire began, but there were no injuries.

Coralville firefighters assisted the North Liberty Fire Department at the scene.

The cause was determined to be accidental after an investigation this morning.
